Meet the Crew

Holiday Greetings from Burkett Farm! The big news this week is that Clare, our first layer, is already an egg-laying machine, producing a perfect, pale cyan egg (containing a rich orange yolk) almost every day. Recently we caught her in the act. She promptly wandered away to peck around for food.

Now, it's time to introduce the humans wandering around the farm (all members of Bland Landscaping):

Mark, a recent Maine transplant, brings a down-to-business New England attitude to our work. He fairly enjoyed his first North Carolina summer, deeming it no big deal. (Of course, we did point out to him that he was treated to an unusually mild one.) He's looking forward to becoming more skilled at seed-starting.  He raises goats and chickens at his homestead.

Laurie, also a homesteader, is our "chicken whisperer." She's known for her pest management expertise, MacGyver-like ability to solve problems, and constant flow of plays-on-words and witticisms.

Greg is a self-proclaimed  naturalist who loves to work the earth. He has great interest in the revival of small scale farming. He takes the lead on our construction projects (such as the chicken run and grapevine trellises), as well as land surveying and field layout.

Marcos is a hard working jack-of-all trades who enjoys jumping into any task that needs doing. He also keeps busy answering questions that begin "How do you say..." as we eagerly struggle to learn Spanish, his second language. His first, which he also enjoys teaching, is Nuhuatl, an Aztec language still spoken in the Puebla state of Mexico.

Jamie, the farm manager, has a strong interest in local food systems, permaculture and pollinator conservation. She left a career in newspaper reporting several years ago to pursue her dream of farming. She is known for her love of talking with humans, birds and plants alike.
