Rainwater Harvesting System

Our rainwater reclamation system is a key component of our overall water management strategy for the site. The system includes three cisterns for collecting, storing, and filtering rainwater.

In the channel between the main structure and the greenhouse is a 60-foot long stainless steel gutter, the keystone of the water reclamation system. That gutter captures the water from rainfall on the roof, and diverts it into two “small” 2,015-gallon galvanized steel catch cisterns.

These smaller cisterns feed into the “main” cistern, which is12 feet in diameter, with a capacity of 27,000 gallons; it features a float switch and float valve to control the level of water; when the volume drops below a certain threshold, it automatically draws more water from the small cisterns through a series of pumps as is necessary. It feeds water through the Pump Room’s three-filter pathway to supply the non-potable system.

  • Total rain water harvest capacity: 31,030 gallons

  • Forecasted monthly harvest: 7,500 gallons
